As they left the drawing room, Beatryce turned on Cliff and in front of everyone, announced, “Now, I have a surprise…a wedding gift…for you, my love. One I know you will adore.”

She grabbed both his hands and backed her way down the hall. Guiding him, again, toward the library.

This time, it was she who paused with her back to the door.

“You are the world to me, Cliff. My heart. My love. My soul. I will care for you for the rest of my days. And…And I’ll care for your family…our family now.” His eyes began to water; she saw disbelief war with pure joy at her intentional use of his exact words. “I have found…” She swallowed around the lump in her throat as tears, yet again, filled her eyes. For the thousandth time that day at least. “Darling D, I have found your sister…”

The succession of emotions that flew across his face in the span of a heartbeat was endearing to behold. She loved this man. She could not say it, could not think it, enough.

She quickly pushed open the door and made to get out of his way before he bowled her over to get inside.

But when she turned to look in the room, the place was empty. His sister was gone.

From behind Cliff, a Scottish burr spoke above the crowd, who’d begun exclaiming all at once in excited chatter.

“Och, I’ll find her.”

And without another word, as was his norm, Alaistair MacLeod turned on his heel and left.

The End

Stay tuned for Lord Alaistair MacLeod’s story…
