“I’m fine. It’s not like I have work tomorrow.”

He nodded. “I told you I would take care of that.” He motioned for me to go down the ladder first.

“So I should report to Mrs. Smedley in the morning?”

“No. Have you decided about the position I offered you at dinner?”

I clenched my jaw. I still had no idea. It seemed too good to be true, and I was old enough to be wary. If he’d caught me at 21 with a proposition like that, I would have jumped on it without a second thought. A few years in the real world had taught me caution, though.

“I don’t know yet.”

“Not good enough, Kate. I need to know now.”

I’ve never done anything like that before.
I just didn’t know! I couldn’t decide who the real me was. I gathered my shoes, lost in thought.

“Okay,” I said, at last.

He smiled wider than I knew a human being could smile. God, he had such perfect teeth. “Wonderful.”

Adamson led the way down the ladder. At the bottom, he slipped a phone from his pocket. He tapped at it a moment, then put it away. “Thomas will be here soon.”

“I thought you wanted to see the museum.”

He grinned. “We can take as long as you want. He won’t mind waiting.” He held out a hand and I twined my fingers with his.

In the limo, half an hour later, we pulled up in front of my apartment. “We have a meeting in New York at 8:00 AM.”

My eyes went wide. It had to be after midnight. “How are we going to get there in time?”

“Our plane leaves in an hour.”

“What?”

“You accepted the position. Are you having second thoughts?”

“No. Can I at least grab my makeup and an overnight bag?”

“Hurry. Get your passport, too.” He opened the door and stepped out.

“Do you want to come up while I gather my things?” I asked.

“If you like.”

I nodded and led him to the elevator. “So why do I need a passport?” I asked.

“As soon as we finish in New York we’re going out the country.”

My heart skipped a beat.
Out of the country?
“Where?”

He shrugged, a devilish grin on his face. “Just take a change of clothes. Everything else will be provided.”

I gulped. It sounded like an adventure. It all sounded like an adventure. I rushed around my apartment gathering my makeup and some clothes. I tossed them into a bag along with some spare undergarments and my sexiest nightie. The passport went on top.

“We need to go,” he said.

“How long will we be gone?”

He shrugged again.

I locked the apartment and followed him down to the limo. I wondered what I had gotten myself into, and what exactly my new job entailed.
