Chapter 5

Jade froze on the spot, unsure of what to do. She felt like punching the man that had revealed her but she didn’t want to start a fight and get them landed in jail or worse. The old woman appeared from around the front of the caravan and quickly ambled up to the group.

“Now what do you all think you are doing looking at the lady? Do you want the Sheik to have your heads on a pike?” She said to them as she rushed in and took Jade’s hood, flipping it back over her face. What was she up to?

It took them a moment but finally a look of horror spread over their faces. “You mean, she’s for the sheik then?” Apparently their lord was someone you didn’t trifle with, she thought.

Suspiciously, one of the other guardsmen asked. “If thats the case, then where is her master. I don’t believe someone would just let a beauty like this travel around by herself.” Jade could see the woman struggle to form a good reason. At a lost herself, she waited for her to come up with something. When the explanation came it wasn’t from her, but Marion. He jumped down from his seat on the back of the wagon and walked over.

“She’s not alone, I am her master.” Snapping his fingers loudly, he pointed to the ground beside him. Shooting him a venomous look from under her hood as she got closer, she came to a stop by his side.

“This one is worth a king’s ransom and I’ll not be having your unworthy commoners eyes defiling her presence. You, get back in the cart.” He said imperially, placing his hand on the small of her back to push her along when she hesitated. Before her anger got the better of her, she climbed back into the caravan, followed up by him. Irena and Ilia’s faces were stricken with the fear of being stopped by the guard. It was obvious they thought all of them were going to get in trouble.

The guards look satisfied yet put off by his response. Leaving them alone, they went back to their posts at either side of the gate. One of them shouted to some unseen person on the other side of the portcullis and moments later it began to raise open with a metallic groan. As soon as it was high enough clearance for the caravan to pull through, Suzan whipped the beasts into a quick trot.

The sisters simultaneously breathed a sigh of relief after they had passed through the gate. Jade’s anger at Marion’s faked claim of ownership over her had yet to abate. Even though she refused to look directly at him she could still see his cocky smirk out of the corner of her eye. To keep herself from saying anything, she clenched her teeth together. Once they were out of the company of the merchant family, she would give him a piece of her mind.

Life in Sargin, despite being in the middle of the desert, was lively and vibrant. The bazaar was the heart of the city, hundreds of merchants, both honest and shady, hawking their wares.Smells of perfumes, spices and the tanning of leather wafted in the air, cloying at first but eventually they grew accustomed to it. Food, fine silks and other exotic fabrics, clothes, jewelry, anything one’s heart desired could be found there. Kern and Jade strolled casually among it’s people one warm afternoon while Marion did re con on the palace.

He had left early in the morning to walk the lengths of its walls, watching for the missing frost blights and where they were being kept. This had been the third day since they had arrived in the desert city and so far they had seen hide nor hair of their target or any other frost blight. It was getting to the point where Jade thought their intel had been incorrect after all.

Before he’d left, Jade had found it curious why he would leave without securing her in the room in some way or another. When she asked, he had said he felt it was safe enough to leave her with Kern, that the girl was instructed to come and find him at a moment’s notice if she should try anything suspicious. That even if she did wish to leave, the expanse of desert sprawling out on either side of the city would slow her down, giving him enough time to find her.

Begrudgingly, she admitted later to herself that he was right. Deeming the trouble to far outweigh the outcome, she had decided to sit in the city and fill the long boring hours of waiting for Marion with exploring.

She had never done something like this simply for pleasure, and found it quite disconcerting when she found the down time to be relaxing. Kern and her upbeat attitude seemed infectious today, even giving herself a little smile. She enjoyed watching the girl skip from one stall to the next, happy in her own world. If only it were easy for her to lose herself like that, to forget about everything thats been happening to her.

Shaking her head to clear the thoughts from her head, she was determined to try and enjoy her time away from the jelwin and forget the whole thing. To go through most of the day like a normal woman would, shopping.

Everything was going fine until there was a moment when she felt a tingling sensation at the nape of her neck. Slowing to a stop, several people shouldered past her with a few irritated mumbled words. Though she looked around, she couldn’t see anything out of the ordinary in the market place, but something was definitely out of place. She almost felt as if she was being drawn towards something, what it was though, was beyond her.

Ahead, Kern eventually turned to see that Jade had stopped following her as she had been, which perked her interest. Marion had told her under strict orders that if she were to try and disappear, that she immediately seek him out. Not liking to have to tell on someone she saw as a big sister get in trouble, she hoped this wasn’t the case now. Pushing her way back through the crowd, she caught a glimpse of the raven haired woman standing off to the side of the walkway.

The troubled look on her face made her wonder why she would just stop like that. Jade never did anything without a purpose. Suspicious now, she made her way to Jade’s side and tugged at her arm.

“Are you all right?” She asked, trying to hide the concern and hint of suspicion in her voice. She knew that the older woman had a thing for veiling her own emotions, and therefore she wanted to learn how to be aloof and womanly like her. So that maybe one day she would get a certain knights attention...

“Shh.” Jade hushed her, cutting her hand through the air in an imperious command for silence. Kern pursed her lips together, sometimes even big sisters were mean though.

“Whats wrong with you? You look out of it.” She continued to pester her, pulling more strongly at her arm now.

“Can you feel something strange in the air?” The near magnetic like draw increased when she stepped further into the throng of bustling people. Distressed now Kern, she gave another strong pull on her arm.

“Jade! You’re the only thing here that is acting strange! Maybe you should go lie down, the heat must be messing with your mind.”

Jerking free from the elven girls grasp, she shot her a withering glance and darted off into the crowd. She had to find out what this thing was that called out to her: shoving people out of her way as she got closer closer, the pull strong enough now that it was almost as if she were physically bound to it.

Closer and closer she came, wondering what could be giving off such a strange sensation. Finally she believed she had found the source in the form of a large weapons stall, its vendor a elderly man who was haggling over the price of some item or another. Pushing her way through the ever present crowd of people, she approached the stall apprehensively.

Weapons of every make and model lined the shelves and table top, swords, glaives, morning stars anything a soldier had the desire and skill to use. Whatever it was that was giving off energy would be found in this stall. Looking about, she studied everyone in the surrounding area, wondering if anyone else could feel it as well. No one seemed to notice.

Focusing her intentions on trying to figure out the mysterious energy source, she was interrupted by loud shouting. Glancing over her shoulder, she saw what she believed to be a scuffle. When people cleared away to keep from getting caught in the cross fire, in the middle of the clearing was two tough looking men beating around a young boy who couldn’t have been older than eleven or twelve years old.

She tried to ignore the broken out conflict and go back to investigating, but something inside of her yearned to enter the fray, to protect the boy. It was the same thing she had felt inside Alva forest, when she had witnessed Kern’s punishment for trying to leave her village. But this time there was no Marion to rush in to the rescue.

Reaching out to swipe a weapon from the merchant, the pulse of energy she’d been tracking pulled her hand towards a rapier of remarkable caliber. Instantly the hum she’d been unable to banish from her mind disappeared, images flickering in and out. A monstrous creature howling in rage, reptilian eyes full of pitch black hatred and then a woman of incredible beauty that made her want to weep. The images were followed by an bombardment of emotions, intense sorrow and agonizing regret. So strong in fact that she gasped and staggered back a step, caught completely off guard.

As swiftly as it had come on, it was gone again leaving her mystified and torn. Hearing a woman cry out in fear snapped her awake, and she turned to see one of the men swinging at the boy, who dodged the blow by shrinking down to the ground with his arms around his knees.

“Stand up and take your cuffs like a man!” The larger of the two, that had just tried to striking him, screamed in a slurred voice. Even from where she stood now, she could tell that he was under the heavy influence of alcohol. Without so much as a look back to the vendor she was stealing from, Jade ran over to the miniature skirmish that she would be putting an end to momentarily, hearing the weapons merchant yelling after her. Normally, she would have been set upon by guards already, but everyone’s attention was on the three in the middle of the road.
