She was pleading, “I’m sorry, Kit. I had to do it this way.”
He didn’t answer her. He walked beyond, dropped his brief case on his seat, strolled back again to the door. Cigarette visible he stepped off; cupped his hand about the match. It blew out. Four minutes until the takeoff. Casually he strolled over to Tobin and the F.B.I.
He said, “There’s a woman in there traveling on a false passport. She isn’t Toni Donne. She is Frau Otto Skaas.”
The one man said, “Come along. Point her out.”
Tobin looked into Kit’s face. He spoke laconically. “I’ll do it. I know her.”
Kit didn’t follow them up the aisle. He stood in the doorway and he didn’t turn until he heard the steps behind him.
Toni hesitated. She looked him in the face. Her eyes were dark as the bottomless pit of Death. There was nothing he could say; no way to express the bitter taste of his regret. He looked away.
She murmured, “I beg your pardon.” She brushed past him.
